Wildflowers Of HoustonEver since I was a small child I have loved wildflowers. I always wanted to know what every flower I found was. I sometimes tried to take pictures of them but was never very good with a camera and didn't want to waste the film. When I got a digital camera in Aug. '97 I was free to experiment with wildflowers without wasting film. This was the start of the database. I wasn't sure how many flowers I would find in the middle of a big city like houston. I started looking along the grassy banks of a bayou and in vacant lots and along railroad tracks. I was quickly amazed at how many flowers I could find even in winter. I started to catalogue all the pictures I took and to identify as many species as I could. My photography still leaves a lot to be desired which makes some pictures hard to identify. Many of the flowers just aren't in the books I have. As I haven't yet searched the libraries many flowers are left unidentified. As I found more and more flowers I decided to make a database program that could automatically generate all the web pages for me. I made a small Java program that keeps a database and generates all the pages as well as the file that the search engine uses. As I enjoy both programming and flowers this project has been a lot of fun. It still takes a while to crop all the photos and enter them into the database though.
