Flowers:

3 green sepals and 3 colored petals. Radially or bilaterally symmetric. Most species' flowers are only open one day.

Fruit:

3 chambered capsule.

Leaves:

linear leaves clasping stem and forming tubular sheath. Alternate.

Plant:

Herb with showy leaflike bracts enveloping flowers.
