Green Mexican Hat, Mexican Hat

Common Name(s): Green Mexican Hat, Mexican Hat Scientific Name: Ratibida tagetes Family: Asteraceae Sunflower Family Flower: Composite flowers with drooping rays. Green Mexican Hat has yellow-green columnar disk and yellow rays which have two uneven lobes. Leaves: Pinnatedly compounded with uneven division. Plant: To 3', highly branched.

General Comments:

The Redspike species is more common in Houston than the Green species. It is also taller and has a larger flower.

Giant Goldenrod

Common Name(s): Giant Goldenrod Scientific Name: Solidago gigantea Family: Asteraceae Sunflower Family Flower: Small cylindrical composite flowers on wide branched stems Leaves: Lancellike leaves often toothed alternate along main stem. Plant: To 6' tall.

General Comments:

Usually found in clusters which grow from colonies of underground rhizomes. Very similar to S. canadensis but found further south.

*One of the wandlike species of goldenrod.
